Champions! Team AHC - Lunar New Year Cup!
18-February-2008
This past weekend saw the 3rd Annual Lunar New Year Cup being played at the beautiful Ricoh Coliseum. The purpose of this event was to provide the Asian community of Toronto with a chance to compete on the same surface as the pros! In celebration of the Chinese New Year, this tournament (complete with tickets to an actual Marlies game and post-game family fun skate) saw 8 teams compete in 2 different divisions.
The intermediate division saw 4 teams compete, with not much separating them. The Giant Pandas, Thundercats, Furyans and Team AHC all took to the ice, this weekend with one goal in mind….the Lunar New Year Cup!!
Team AHC beat the Giant Pandas 4-1 in the first round robin game, played extremely well against the Thundercats winning 7-3 in the 2nd game, and then lost to the Furyans in the 3rd round robin game 4-3.
Although Team AHC lost their 3rd game, they still ended up 1st place with a record of 2-1 (+6).
The finals would not disappoint, as the Furyans and Team AHC would meet up again with a very tightly contested game. The score would ping pong back and forth and the Furyans would take the lead 3-2. With just 23 clicks left in the final period, Team AHC would tie up the game, and then take the shoot out to solidify the Championship!
MVP Award: The Asian Hockey Championship supported the Lunar New Year Cup, by providing an AHC Hockey Jersey to the MVP of the tournament. That honour went to Ric Hastings (Team Asian Nemesis) who led the tournament in scoring. Ric Hastings is a Safe and Fun League player as well as an Asian Hockey Championship player. Congratulations to Ric Hastings for taking home this honour.
The Recreational Division would crown 16 Guys Named Moes as their champion this year, beating The Chiefs in a very close game. (full details to come).
