There is something special about this hockey tournament. Yes, there were hockey players, hockey parents, kids running around in the lobby and that hockey bag aroma you eventually get used to . . . well for some of us. What I meant was there was a different energy and friendliness to this event. While lifting boxes of merchandise and trophies, I asked one of the organizers, Jonsun, what makes this event so special. He told me from the tournament’s humble beginnings of 8 teams, this event has always been a family like occasion. People compete hard but it’s also a time and place where friends can meet up, bond and reminisce. (Full story)

To answer questions in regards to what we are looking for here . . . let’s say that we’ve discussed different options.
- AHC Idol - we know there are a lot of multi-talented hockey players/fans out there.
- AHC "So you think you can Dance?" – we’ve seen you guys skate . . . surely your dance moves are better than that!
- AHC "Temptation Island?" . . . uhmmm, this is a family event . . . so don’t count on it. Perhaps Survivor though.
There was an idea posed to us that we should make every team compete based on talent outside of the hockey rink. We would have judges, and the teams combined score of hockey and talent show events would determine if they made it to the finals!!! Don’t worry . . . we’re not here to embarrass people!!
In regards to Culture…there’s a lot of beautiful aspects of all the cultures represented in this event. We have a large contingent of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Filipino players. There is also a growing base of Vietnamese, Malaysian and other South East/East Asian Cultures.
Arts, History, Martial Arts, Music, food and drink, dance, poetry, plays/skits etc, etc. These are along the lines we were thinking of.
Do you have feedback in regards to this? Please contact us at changr@mygamesheet.com.

18 years the Asian Hockey Championship has been played, and roughly 1,000+ players have competed for the ultimate prize over the last 2 decades . . . the AHC Cup!!
Well known for it's family atmosphere involving music, children activities, and cultural food and drink . . . all of this is taken in stride with the ultimate goal in mind . . . lifting the Cup over their heads!!
Only a select few have had the honour of doing so over the last 18 years, and a complete list of past Champions has been compiled. Many hours of phone calls and emails were required to complete this, as prior to 5 years ago, none of the annual Champions were documented in a list format. (Full story)

CBC’s Hockey Day in Canada (view pre-game article) broke new ground Saturday, February 9th, 2008 by providing live and online, 3 games in Cantonese, Mandarin and Hindi. The game between Detriot and Toronto at the Air Canada Centre (CBC 3pm ET) was available in Mandarin, with University of Toronto students Yutong Zhao and Zhen Jiang calling the action. At 10pm ET, the Colorado and Vancouver game was available online in Cantonese with Alex Chum (view interview with Alex Chum) of Omni Television handling the play by play, and the Asian Hockey Championship and Cultural Event’s very own Bill Tang providing the analysis. Alex Chum has covered the Asian Hockey Championship and Cultural Event for many years now, and Bill Tang has been a supporter for many years. We caught up with Bill Tang after his broadcasting debut! To all you weekend warriors out there, training and exercising throughout the week may not be an option. Whether it is school, work, family, you are busy with something. There is never enough time! We all know the importance of exercising and how healthy and good for you it is. It is well documented and studied. I spent 6 years reading, engaging and applying it. Now I have 2 degrees to share what I have learned. From theoretical teachings to many personal experiences and observations, I will be sharing with you throughout the year. But for now, what I came up with is 1 exercise that can prolong your weekend hockey or once a week skate career. (Full story)

The weekend saw the 3rd Annual Lunar New Year Cup being played at the beautiful Ricoh Coliseum. The purpose of this event was to provide the Asian community of Toronto with a chance to compete on the same surface as the pros! In celebration of the Chinese New Year, this tournament (complete with tickets to an actual Marlies game and post-game family fun skate) saw 8 teams compete in 2 different divisions. The intermediate division saw 4 teams compete, with not much separating the 4 teams. The Giant Pandas, Thundercats, Furyans and Team AHC all took to the ice, this weekend with one goal in mind . . . the Lunar New Year Cup!! (View the full story)

The Asian All Star team going to Hong Kong this May is practicing March 22nd, 2008. Details will follow shortly. There are still positions remaining for interested parties to experience this fantastic opportunity to visit Hong Kong (the city that never sleeps . . . similar to New York). Play some excellent hockey, have authentic Chinese food, and meet our fellow hockey brothers and sisters in the South East. Don’t miss out on this opportunity!
